Super Bowl

The Korean-BBQ Turning Point (Super Bowl 2025)

Last updated

For six Super Bowl parties running, classic Buffalo wings were the highest-consumed sauce at the table. Order 40 of them and 40 were gone by halftime. In 2025 that changed. Korean BBQ wings from a delivery-only Korean spot outsold classic buffalo three to one. This is what happened and what it means.

The 2025 Spread

Angelina's

Three pies (Sicilian, vodka, grandma) plus four heros (broccoli rabe & grilled chicken, chicken cutlet parm, grilled chicken, meatball). Angelina's has been the pizza-and-hero backbone of every party since 2018. Never miss.

Holy Cow Sliders

Mix-and-match slider box, half chicken half beef. Sliders are underrated at a wing party. They soak up beer, they don't compete with the wing flavours, and one person can eat three of them without noticing.

B.BQ (Korean, delivery-only)

Five different wing styles: Gangnam Style, Caribbean Spice, Gangjeong, Secret Sauce, Golden Original. Eight wings per order. This is where the shift happened. The Gangnam Style (soy-garlic base) and the Gangjeong (candied crispy) both hit harder than any wing at the table.

Atomic Wings / BWW GO / Wing Stop

The chain baseline. Mango Habanero, Atomic Sauce, Jerk BBQ, Buffalo Medium, Teriyaki, plus a mixed traditional order. Solid, consistent, expected.

Rocco's

Sausage and peppers, Philly cheesesteak. Not wings. Necessary for the crowd that will always drift toward a hero at some point during the fourth quarter.

Austin Ale House

Backup order of Jamaican Orange (spicy) Buffalo wings. Wasn't needed because everything else held up, but it was the insurance that the 2024 pivot taught me to always order.

What Actually Happened at the Table

Kickoff at 6:30. First to run out: Korean BBQ wings from B.BQ, around 8pm (halfway through the second quarter). Second to run out: Atomic Sauce (Atomic Wings' signature) around 9pm. Third: Mango Habanero. Classic Buffalo Medium from BWW GO was the last wing box at the table, still half full at the end of the game.

That has never happened before. Buffalo Medium is the safe pick, the crowd default, the sauce that's supposed to disappear first. Instead people gravitated to Korean-style sauces they'd never had at a wing party before.

Why the Shift

Three theories:

  • Novelty. Most guests had never had a Gangnam Style or Gangjeong wing. New flavours at a familiar format are memorable in a way that a great classic buffalo just isn't.
  • Sauce viscosity. Korean glazes are stickier and last longer at room temperature than butter-based sauces. By the fourth quarter, the buffalo wings had gone from glossy to matte and lost half their appeal. The Korean wings still looked freshly glazed.
  • Spice tolerance shift. The party crowd's collective spice tolerance has climbed year over year. Classic buffalo (mild-to-medium heat) now feels bland to a table that's tried atomic sauce, jerk, gochujang. The floor moved up.

What to Steal

If you're planning a 2026 party and haven't tried a Korean or Korean-adjacent wing vendor, put one in the spread. Make it 20% of your wing count, not 10%. Watch what happens. If you're the host who's still ordering 40 wings of classic Buffalo Medium as the default order, consider that your guests have moved on.

The Updated Ordering Framework

  1. 25% classic buffalo (down from 40%).
  2. 25% Korean or Korean-adjacent (new required slot).
  3. 20% chain signature sauce (Atomic, Mango Habanero, etc.).
  4. 15% dry rub or dry-seasoned (lemon pepper, garlic parm).
  5. 15% wildcard (jerk, Nashville hot, something local).
The safe pick used to be the crowd favourite. It isn't anymore.
